Making the Dancing Dragonflies Scarf: Part Five

Round Six - The border!

Welcome to the final round of the Dancing Dragonflies Scarf! (Click here for written pattern) There's one more tutorial to go after this, though... We still have to add the accent. Perhaps after the slight confusion of the last tutorials, I should just call Round 6 "the border". However, we're done with the Dragonfly pattern stitch, so there's no more worries over "round -- of the pattern is actually row -- of the Dragonfly stitch".... But Part Five still covers Round six, just to throw some confusion back into it... You should have your ends woven in from the last tutorial, so get ready to add the contrasting color!

Stitches used in this tutorial:

Double crochet two together (dc2tog) - You'll get instructions for this stitch in this tutorial!

New to the project?

Just missed the last one?

Let's get started!

1.
You will join the contrasting color in the same corner space where you ended Round 5. In case you've moved your project and lost your place, this will be the corner space to the right of a long side if you're right-handed; left side for lefties. Join with a slip stitch, then chain 3 to count as the beginning double crochet.

2.
In the same corner space, you will make 2 more double crochet, chain 2, and make 3 more double crochet in the same space.

3.
Chain 4. You will skip the next 4 double crochet stitches. Make 1 double crochet in the chain-5 space of the first multiple.

4.
Chain 5 to reach the tip of the "tail". The next picture will highlight where you will make the following stitch, in case it's a bit twisted like mine is here.

5.
As shown in the previous picture, insert your hook in the tip of the "tail". This stitch is either the front or the back loop of the skipped chain in the tail: Even I'm not sure exactly which it is. Either way, it's the single loop that will stick out from the tip of the tail. Put your hook there, okay?

6.
Yarn over and pull through the loops on the hook to make a slip stitch. You should see a "ridge" of stitches running down the front of the tail.

7.
Oops, I missed a picture! (Oh, wait... The troll stole it... Yeah, that's it!) You'll need to chain 5 after the slip stitch in the tail.
To begin the dc2tog stitch, yarn over the hook as for a double crochet. Insert the hook in the first available ch-5 space, pull up a loop. You'll have 3 loops on the hook.

8.
Yarn over, pull through only two loops on the hook. You will have 2 loops remaining on the hook. (Hey, beginners: This is know as a "half-closed double crochet", in case you ever run into it in a pattern!)

9.
Yarn over for the next step of the dc2tog. Insert the hook in the next chain-5 space of the next multiple. Pull up a loop. You'll have 4 loops on your hook.

10.
Yarn over, pull through only two loops on the hook. (This makes a second half-closed double crochet.) You will have 3 loops remaining on the hook.

11.
Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook to complete the dc2tog stitch. This will join the first multiple with the next one.

12.
Repeat step 4 through 11 for the remaining multiple (18 more, as the pattern is written). You can't make a dc2tog for the last multiple, though! To complete this one: Chain 5, sl st in the tip of the tail, ch 5. Make 1 dc in the last available ch-5 space.

13.
Chain 4 and skip the next 4 dc's. Make (3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet) in the chain-4 corner space. This makes the second corner of Round 6.

14.
Make 1 double crochet in each of the next 6 dc's. Including the 3 dc's in the corner, you will have 9 dc's after the corner ch-2 space.

15.
Make 6 double crochet in the middle chain-5 space. From the corner ch-2 space, you will now have 15 dc's across this side.

16.
Make 1 double crochet in each of the next 6 double crochet stitches. From the corner ch-2 space, you will now have 21 dc's.

17.
In the next corner ch-4 space, make (1 double crochet. ch 2, 1 double crochet). This makes the third corner space of Round 6. You will now have 24 dc's between the second and third corner ch-2 spaces.

18.
To work towards the next set of multiples: Chain 4, skip the next 4 dc's. and make 1 double crochet in the ch-5 space of the next multiple.

19.
*Chain 5, sl st in the tip of the next tail, chain 5. Dc2tog beginning in the first available ch-5 space and ending in the next.* Repeat from * to * for a total of 19 multiples (as the pattern is written).

20.
For the last multiple: Chain 5, sl st in the tip of the tail. Chain 5, make 1 double crochet in the last available ch-5 space.

21.
Chain 4, skip the next 4 dc's. Make (3 double crochet, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch-4 corner space. This makes the fourth corner of Round 6.

22.
Okay, let's speed it up for the last step! Make 1 double crochet in each of the next 6 dc's. Make 6 dc in the middle ch-5 space. Make 1 double crochet in each of the following 6 dc's. Join with a sl st to the beginning ch-3. Bind off, weave in your ends, and get ready to add the accent next time!

Happy Crocheting!
